Battery and long rides

Groupetto records your ride even with the display locked and needs no network for it. With a few simple steps you get more out of one battery charge. Here is what costs power and what you can do about it.

What drains the battery

  • Display on. The display is one of the biggest power consumers on an iPhone.
  • Weak cell reception. In the mountains or when roaming, the iPhone keeps searching for a network. That costs power, even if you don’t notice.
  • GPS search. With a poor view of the sky, for example in forests, gorges or between tall buildings, GPS has to work harder.
  • Heat. A warm iPhone uses more power. Direct sun on the handlebars or a pocket close to your body make it warmer.
  • Additional wireless connections. Bluetooth sensors and RideTogether over Wi-Fi are additional connections. How much they cost depends on the device.

What helps

  • Display off. Groupetto keeps recording when the display is locked. Leave “Screen always ON” off. You’ll find the switch in the ride view, top right under the gear icon.
  • Use announcements. Under Settings > Announcements, Groupetto announces peaks, segments and achievements. With the interval (“Alert every”) you hear distance, average speed and elevation gain. Announcements are off by default.
  • Lock screen. If Live Activities are allowed for Groupetto, the lock screen shows ride time and a button for pause and resume. You don’t have to open the app.
  • Airplane mode. Recording needs no network, and GPS keeps working. Turn Bluetooth back on afterwards so your sensors stay connected. For RideTogether, Wi-Fi has to be on.
  • Low Power Mode. Groupetto also keeps recording in Low Power Mode.
  • Power bank. Take one along on very long rides.

Without a network

We are measuring how long the battery lasts in each configuration. Once the values are reliable, they will appear here.

Measurements

Wie lange der Akku in welcher Konfiguration hält, messen wir gerade. Sobald die Werte belastbar sind, stehen sie hier.
